Bath to Claverton Down and the Bathwick Boatman, Bath

Although Bath is not officially part of the Cotswolds, it lies on the southern edge of the region, and sections of this route pass through the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Starting at the train station, this route takes you out of the city and up the hill, leading you through Bathampton Wood. You’ll circle around Claverton Down, a scenic area offering expansive views, before passing by St. Mary’s Church in Bathwick.

The route then brings you back toward the starting point, offering a satisfying loop for hikers. If it’s your first time discovering this walk, we suggest following the trail clockwise as the National Trust has removed signage for the counterclockwise direction, making it easy to wander off track if you don’t follow the recommended path.

There are several benches strategically placed along the route, providing the chance for a quick and comfortable break while you soak up the surrounding views. While the trail offers a variety of landscapes, be mindful that there are some steep sections, both uphill and downhill.

HIKE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Bathampton Wood: A peaceful section of the trail, Bathampton Wood offers a serene woodland experience that’s great for nature lovers and birdwatchers
  • Claverton Down Views: As you walk around Claverton Down, you’ll be treated to sweeping vistas of the surrounding countryside and the city of Bath in the distance
