Top Ten Hikes in the Cotswolds: Castle Combe

Castle Combe to Nettleton Mill and The Castle Inn, Castle Combe
This route begins in the picturesque village of Castle Combe, often referred to as ‘the prettiest village in England’. While enjoying this trail, be mindful of certain sections that run along a golf course, pass private property, and follow quiet country lanes with occasional traffic.
The journey begins by winding through the parkland of a golf course before connecting to a peaceful stream-side path. This stretch takes you past the historic ruins of Nettleton Mill and leads you across an ancient clapper bridge.
The return journey offers some of the most beautiful sights, including sections of beech woodland that come alive with wild garlic in spring. Along the way, you’ll encounter footbridges, gates, kissing gates, and a stile to navigate.
As you head back into Castle Combe, take some time to explore the area, including its picturesque stone cottages, historic market cross, and the church. Expect several long, steady climbs and descents. Be prepared for varying conditions: woodland paths can become muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy walking boots are a must.
During the summer months, we suggest wearing long trousers to help you navigate any overgrown sections of the trail.
