Old Man of Coniston and the Black Bull, Coniston

Begin your hike at the Walna Scar Road car park, the trail follows the track before ascending the rough path to the summit of The Old Man of Coniston. The initial section of the hike is along a well-maintained track that gently ascends through farmland and into open moorland before becoming steeper and more rugged, eventually taking you into rocky terrain.

The climb to the summit of Old Man of Coniston is challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking views of Coniston Water, Grizedale Forest and the surrounding fells. From the summit, you’ll be treated to panoramic views, with Helvellyn, Dow Crag, and the tallest peak in England, Scafell Pike, visible on a clear day. The summit of Old Man is marked by a large cairn, providing a perfect spot to rest, admire the spectacular scenery and take a few photos to capture the moment.

When you’re ready to continue, begin to make your way down by following the well-marked trail that leads you down the mountain. The path descends in a series of switchbacks, offering further views of the Coniston Fells and Lake District landscape. Be cautious on the rocky sections as it can be very steep and uneven in places.

Once you’ve reached the base of the hill, follow the trail back towards Coniston Village to The Black Bull Inn, a traditional pub built around 400 years ago. Find a table where you can sit back, relax and refuel with classic pub meals and a sweet treat.
