Acres Down and the New Forest Inn, Lyndhurst

This scenic and memorable circular walk is one of the more accessible routes in the New Forest, taking you through open heathland and the peaceful woodlands of Acres Down Forest before leading to the Canadian War Memorial and looping back. The memorial, located near Bolderwood, stands as a poignant tribute to the Canadian troops stationed here during World War II. The New Forest served as a vital training ground for these soldiers, who prepared for their pivotal role in the D-Day landings of 1944 and the liberation of Europe. The maple leaf engraved on the stone monument symbolises Canada’s enduring contribution and the sacrifices made during the war, offering visitors a quiet and reflective moment amid the tranquility of the forest. The route features a mix of easy-to-follow paths and wide gravel tracks, making it particularly suitable for walkers of all abilities. Along the way, you’ll pass through a variety of landscapes, from heathland with sweeping views to shaded forest paths surrounded by towering trees. There are two bridges and a couple of gates to navigate, but no stiles or challenging obstacles, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience. Quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger at the New Forest Inn, a traditional 18th-century country pub where ponies, donkeys, cows and pigs often wander past the front door, adding to its rustic and quintessentially New Forest charm.
