Top Ten Hikes in the Lake District: Keswick

Castlerigg Stone Circle and the Dog and Gun, Keswick
This stunning circular trail in the Lake District National Park begins at the Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the oldest and most impressive prehistoric sites in Britain, dating back to around 3000 BC. It’s a good idea to wear your best hiking shoes for this one, as the route involves varied terrain.
From the stone circle, you'll follow Castle Lane before crossing the A591 and venturing through fields towards the ascent. The climb takes you past Brockley Beck, a small stream with incredible views over Keswick, Derwentwater and the Skiddaw Range.
After reaching the summit of Walla Crag, a popular fell standing at 379 metres, panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape await. On your descent, follow Lady’s Rake, a steep rocky path, and Cat Gill, a stream and path passing through Great Wood, before retracing your steps back to the car park.
Satisfy your appetite at the Dog and Gun, a traditional pub located in the heart of Keswick, where you can soak up the local ambience over a glass of wine, a steak pie and a sticky toffee pudding.
