Top Ten Hikes in the Lake District: Catbells

Catbells and The Swinside Inn, Portinscale
The trail begins along the edge of Derwentwater, offering incredible views across the lake before leading into the steep and rocky ascent up Cat Bells. This section involves some scrambling, so take your time as you navigate the climb. The path will lead you to the base of Catbells, a popular fell known for its moderate climb and unforgettable panoramic views.
The ascent begins gradually, winding through heathland and bracken. As you climb, the views of Derwentwater and the surrounding peaks, including Skiddaw and Borrowdale, are likely to stop you in your tracks. The path is well-defined and while it does involve a steady climb, it is manageable for most hikers.
Once you reach the summit of Catbells, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views. To the west, you can see the stunning Derwentwater, with the surrounding fells stretching out in every direction. To the north, Skiddaw and the Northern Fells dominate the skyline, while the Newlands Valley lies to the south.
From there, the route follows the ridge, providing sweeping panoramic views as you make your way toward Maiden Moor. The trail then descends sharply over rough terrain, passing through Manesty and continuing into Manesty Park.
After your adventures, journey to The Swinside Inn, a 17th-century country pub with a homely vibe. It’s just a 15-minute walk from the base of Cat Bells and serves a selection of pub classics made from locally sourced products.
