Top Ten Hikes in the Peak District: The Roaches

The Roaches and Ye Olde Rock Inn, Upper Hulme

This circular route takes you through some of Cheshire’s most spectacular landscapes, combining dramatic rock formations with lush woodlands. Parking is available in marked places on Roach Road, where you’ll start by heading west towards the famous Roaches, a range of gritstone hills that are a highlight of the Peak District National Park. 

The initial ascent is steady but as you climb, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside. The towering Roaches rocks are a spectacular sight and the views of the valleys below offer excellent photo opportunities. You’ll pass by the prominent Rocky Ridge and make your way through an area of heathland, characterised by distinctive rocky outcrops and heather-covered moorlands. 

Continue along the trail and descend towards Lud’s Church, a hidden gem tucked within the woods. This ancient landmark, believed to have been a place of worship during medieval times, is a mystical spot that is surrounded by towering moss-covered rock walls and dense trees. Next, you’ll head through Doxey Pool, a small pond shrouded in legend, before making your way back towards the original starting point. 

Just a short drive away, Ye Olde Rock Inn offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere with its low-beamed ceilings, cosy fireplaces and traditional charm. This inviting country pub serves a variety of hearty dishes, seasonal specials and delicious vegetarian options, making it the perfect place to relax and refuel.
