Top Ten Hikes in the Lake District: Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike from Wasdale Head and The Wasdale Head Inn, Wasdale
This demanding circular hike is for the more experienced adventurers, as Scafell Pike is the highest peak in England. Beginning in Wasdale, the birthplace of British climbing, this technical trail follows Lingmell River before starting the steep ascent. The path leads you up loose and rocky terrain, culminating in a steep climb to Mickledore.
At a fork in the path, the route becomes much more challenging, involving a technical climb up a loose gully filled with scree. As you scramble upwards, you’ll need to take great care with your footing to avoid dislodging rocks or slipping. Some sections will require hands-on climbing, so it’s important to be well-prepared and sure-footed.
Afterwards, the path becomes less distinct and you’ll need to navigate across a boulder-strewn field towards the summit of Scafell Pike. Once you reach the top, you’ll be standing at the highest point in England (978 metres / 3,209 feet). On a clear day, you can see as far as the Isle of Man, the Scottish Highlands and the North Wales peaks.
Take a moment to pat yourself on the back, and perhaps take a few photos to capture the moment, as you admire the awe-inspiring views from this incredible vantage point. The descent below Lingmell is less technical but still requires caution, as the path is steep and the loose rocks can be slippery.
The world-famous Wasdale Head Inn awaits on your return, offering an extensive menu of tasty food, including gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan dishes.
