Chatsworth Estate and the Wheatsheaf, Baslow

Begin this circular walk in Baslow, a village that dates back to Saxon times. Follow the track into the Chatsworth Estate, crossing the parkland to reach Queen Mary’s Bower. This spot is believed to have been a favourite of Mary Queen of Scots during her captivity here, with her coat of arms still visible above the gateway.

Stop by Paine’s Bridge over the River Derwent before heading to Chatsworth House and its surrounding parklands offering sweeping views, lakes and ancient trees. It’s home to a large herd of deer, primarily fallow and red deer, that can often be seen grazing in the early morning or late afternoon when they are most active.

Continue along the path towards Chatsworth Aqueduct, built in 1839, looping back past Swiss Lake, designed as part of the 19th-century landscaping improvements, and Emperor Lake, a more secluded spot compared to the busier areas around the house and gardens.

End your walk back in Baslow, where you can stop at the Wheatsheaf for a hot drink and a well-earned rest.
