Kinder Scout and The Old Nags Head, Edale

Set off on this hike from Edale Village, a charming village nestled in the Hope Valley, and head towards the Edale Valley, following signs for Kinder Scout. The route gradually ascends, boasting amazing views of the valley below. You’ll pass through farmland and stone-walled fields before reaching the foot of Grindsbrook Clough, a rocky ravine.

The path gets quite steep and rugged as you ascend this section so take your time navigating the boulders. At the top, you’ll emerge onto the Kinder Plateau, a vast expanse of moorland that feels incredibly wild and remote. After breathing in the fresh Derbyshire air and admiring the surrounding landscape, follow the trail across the plateau to Kinder Downfall, the Peak District’s tallest waterfall.

Wear waterproof hiking clothes on windy days, as the water is often blown back on itself creating an impressive spray display. Pause here to take in the view, including the Kinder Reservoir below. Continue along the path to join the Pennine Way, one of the UK’s most famous long-distance trails.

Follow this route all the way down towards Edale, with the peaks of Kinder Scout and Mam Tor in the distance. End your hike back at The Old Nags Head, where you can reward yourself with a tasty pub classic and a cold drink.
