Tarn Hows Circular and the Drunken Duck Inn, Outgate

This circular route in the Lake District National Park takes you around Tarn Hows, offering stunning views from the viewpoint, before leading you up to the impressive Tarn Ghyll Waterfalls. The trail combines gentler paths with rougher tracks, so sturdy hiking boots are essential, particularly in wetter conditions. You’ll pass through woodlands, alongside the tarn and enjoy panoramic vistas of the Langdale Pikes.

There are several stunning viewpoints en route, each offering moments of reflection and excellent photo opportunities. As you walk, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife native to the area, including red squirrels and woodpeckers. The trail is generally well-marked but it can become muddy after rainfall, especially on the hill climbs, so be prepared for potentially slippery sections.

Afterwards, make your way to The Drunken Duck Inn, a historic pub with a cosy ambience and fantastic locally-sourced food. Its outdoor terrace offers stunning views of the Langdale Pikes and the nearby countryside too.
