Bourton to the Slaughters and The Mousetrap Inn, Bourton-on-the-Water

This excellent circular trail begins in the popular village of Bourton-on-the-Water, taking you through Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter with riverside views along the Windrush River. As you explore, be aware that certain sections of the trail run along quiet country roads without pavements, so it’s important to stay vigilant for passing vehicles.

The trail can get quite muddy during wetter months, particularly in the more rural sections, and some parts can become overgrown during the summer. For a comfortable and safe walk, we recommend wearing sturdy hike footwear and leg coverings, especially as you pass through woodland or more rugged terrain.

Head to The Mousetrap Inn after your adventure ends, a family-run establishment that serves up a diverse menu of starters, mains, desserts, and more.

HIKE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Bourton-on-the-Water: Often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ because of the picturesque River Windrush, which flows through the village and is crossed by several stone bridges
  • Lower Slaughter: A must-visit destination, renowned for its picturesque charm that has made it a favourite filming location for period dramas like Emma
  • Upper Slaughter: Close to Lower Slaughter and famous for its views of the surrounding countryside
