Top Ten Hikes in the Peak District: Mam Tor

Mam Tor and The Castle, Castleton

This popular circular route offers a challenging yet rewarding hike in the heart of the Peak District, taking you through some of the most iconic landmarks in the area. Starting from the Mam Tor car park, you’ll begin by heading east, following the well-trodden paths that lead up to the top of Mam Tor, often known as the Shivering Mountain due to its eroding landscape. 

As you ascend, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys, including the picturesque village of Castleton below. From the summit of Mam Tor, you’ll be able to take in panoramic views of the Hope Valley and the Dark Peak region, a perfect spot for taking photos, enjoying some snacks and catching your breath before continuing the trail. 

The route then descends towards Hollins Cross, one of the Peak District’s most distinctive ridge lines, offering sweeping views across the Edale Valley. This section involves some steeper terrain and rocky paths, so take extra care as you make your way down. 

Once at Hollins Cross, you’ll follow a well-marked trail that leads you toward Castleton, a picturesque village famed for its caves and medieval castle. Head to the Castle Hotel, a 19th-century inn located in the heart of the village, where you can wine and dine in total comfort before looping back towards the Mam Tor car park.

The final section of the hike is a steady climb back up, completing the circular loop with amazing views of the entire region.
