Top Ten Hikes in the Peak District: Monsal Dale

Monsal Dale and The Packhorse Inn, Little Longstone
Begin your journey at Monsal Head car park, where you’ll immediately be greeted by a stunning view over Monsal Dale and the Wye Valley. As you continue along the trail, make your way towards the Monsal Viaduct, an iconic 19th-century railway bridge that offers panoramic views of the river and surrounding countryside. The viaduct is one of the most photographed landmarks in the Peak District, making it a perfect spot for a quick stop and a few photos.
Head along the Monsal Trail, a former railway line that has been converted into a cycling path and hiking trail that takes you through a variety of landscapes, including woodland, farmland and open fields. You’ll pass through tunnels, with one of the most notable being the Headstone Tunnel (a torch could come in handy here).
Continue along this scenic path for about a mile, keeping an eye out for kingfishers and dippers often seen along the riverbanks. The trail loops back towards Monsal Head, passing through peaceful meadows and farmland along the way.
Head uphill towards the village of Little Longston, just a 15-minute walk away from Monsal Head car park. This picturesque village is home to the Packhorse Inn, a traditional pub with a warm atmosphere, hearty meals and a fantastic selection of local ales.
